About the Artist

David Thompson (Dave) is a native of Ontario, Canada and lives in Charlotte, North Carolina.
At the age of 49, Dave suffered a severe heart attack and is the proud owner of three stents in the left anterior artery of his heart. To celebrate his 50th birthday, he and his wife Cathy traveled to The Ritz-Carlton St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands. On October 12, 2004, his birthday, Dave took his first watercolor art class at the resort with teacher Lucinda Eubanks. That lesson led to a love for painting and an artist was born!
After taking watercolor classes with Nancy Couick in Charlotte for many years, in 2014 Dave branched out and began studying oils under the Impressionistic Landscape artist Andy Braitman. In 2020, Dave will be an artist in residence at Braitman Studio.
Having a major health bump actually saved his life and, more importantly, his "life soul" as Dave describes it. "It laid the foundation for who I am today. My artwork is a great reminder that we are surrounded by beauty and life-memories. We just need to make time to enjoy them. Painting is a way for me to express my adoration for nature and the extraordinary".
After retiring as a partner of WEDGE Capital Management, Dave channeled his time into art and teaching. For 10 years he served as an Adjunct Instructor in the Department of Finance, Banking and Insurance for the Walker College of Business at Appalachian State University and continues to serve as a member of The Business Advisory Counsel. His objective is to use his work and life experiences to enrich and expand the education of students focused in the areas of finance and accounting.
Now focusing primarily on art Dave says, "On October 12, 2019, I turned 65. I’m a 15-year-old artist, and 15-year-olds still have a lot of growing to do. I find that very exciting".
